Twenty first century life must surely be confusing to our children. What do they see as they look out on their life, their future? They have been born into a world and are surrounded by messages of self destruction at every turn. Global warming, over extended health care systems, obesity, increasing rates of cancers, diabetes and other illnesses, high percentage of families in crisis due to separations and divorce, recession, increasing dependence on drugs (medical and recreational) – not to mention wars, erupting volcanoes, tsunamis, degradation of forests, water restrictions, water pollution, toxic foods, etc etc. Does this create fear? Fear of where they fit into it all. Fear creates it’s own stress and stress creates ill health. Of all the problems encountered in modern families, few are more pervasive than stress. Stress is known to cause a wide variety of ailments and serious diseases, not to mention the emotional impact on family members which can often lead to arguments and alienation. . Insidious and unrelenting media manipulation has moulded the public belief system and created a kind of cultural conditioning where people have been led to believe in things that are polar opposites of the actual truth - this creates fear.
FEAR is an acronym of – False Evidence Appearing Real! It is now well known that we can influence our children right from the time they are conceived. We have an awesome privilege and responsibility. Are we teaching our children to examine the facts and question and search for the truth themselves. Are we teaching them about self responsibility and sustainability and simple ways to preserve their health and how they can escape most of what is happening in the world around them?
How we manage our own lives, its stressors, it’s joys and sorrows is the blue print by which our children will most likely live their own lives. Children must experience their parents moving through both good times and bad, with perspective and composure, knowing life consists of both the bad times and the good. They must witness the healthy skills we develop and utilise so that they can access the same, as they navigate both contentment and frustration, joy and disappointment.
What do our children see in our lives? Do they see us making healthy choices, considering our lifestyles as the root cause of many problems? Are we eating well, moving well and thinking well? Do we honour ourselves, our bodies and realise this is the only one we have. When our body wears out, where will we live? Do we abuse our health and then expect a miracle to save us? The effect of every choice we make is witnessed by our children. Do we exhibit responsibility, discipline and integrity? These ways of being are fast becoming old fashioned and out dated, however these are the daily skills required to build their very own Noah’s ark, to help them sail over troubled waters.
Unfortunately many children witness their parents stress and way of coping is to take some kind of over the counter drug or painkiller. This sends a message to our children that drugs are an escape from pain – physical and/or mental. Is this what we want them to see and believe. Does this lead on to recreational drug use – taking something to escape into an altered or preferred state? We need to be happy and healthy ourselves before we can have happy, healthy children. Example is the greatest teacher. Raising healthy happy children hasn’t always been the challenge it is today. Children are now exposed to so many persuasive influences. Most of those influences are not healthy ones and are not about making healthy lifestyle choices. We have an awesome responsibility to nurture and protect our children. Recent research has revealed that everything we do, beginning even, before conception, shapes our children in critical, life altering ways.
Probably the most empowering belief we can invest in our children is to believe that it is NORMAL to be healthy. The Chiropractic profession is leading the Wellness Revolution aimed at educating children and adults about the impact of posture on health. Even Socrates himself said – “If you would have health look first to the spine.” The spine houses the nervous system which controls and co-ordinates virtually every other cell, tissue, muscle, gland and organ in the entire body – that means the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune systems and any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. We experience the world through our nervous system. Every day the spine is subject to physical (trauma), mental/emotional (thoughts) and chemical (toxin) stressors. The purpose of Chiropractic is to find and reduce/remove stress and interference in the nervous system thus allowing the body to heal itself naturally.
Our responsibility as parents and guardians is to find the courage to break free of traditions that do not and have not served our families and instead, learn to confidently follow our inner wisdom which can lead us to a more healthy and fulfilling life.
