In spring our spirits rise as everything in nature expands and blooms and the days lengthen and brighten and the sun begins to shine and the gloom of winter lifts. This has a positive effect on our general health.

Our body is a miracle.  It has an infinite capacity for change, renewal and regeneration.  Spring is also the season of new hope and new life and a wonderful time full of vitality and potential.  We see it in the lambs in the field, the new growth on the trees and the bulbs showing their beautiful blooms, the birds in their nests and children frolicking in the sun – all with a sense of joy and expectation.   It is also the perfect time to think about Spring Cleaning –  not only the home in which we live but our body, the home of our soul.   Spring is the perfect time to consider that detox you had been planning.  Fasting has been used since Biblical times through the modern world to help purify and heal the body (and soul)  and traditionally our earlier ancient ancestors had no choice in the matter in regard to detoxing in Spring as very often towards the end of winter the supplies and stores of food had begun to run out and what was left was used very sparingly until  warmer weather brought more supplies.

I recently read something that made me stop and think – it said “we only crave that which is within us”.    I spent some time thinking about this and realised just how true that statement is, which explains why when we go through a detoxification process we lose our desire for whatever we have been craving.  It also explained to me why I found it possible to eat no sugar at all, completely keep it from my diet and then think I will just have a little and very soon find I am “craving” it!  This also explains why those eating junk food, continue to do so, simply because remnants of those foods remain within the body until they are removed – by detoxification, or over a period of time and while those molecules of food remain, the body will continue to crave it.

This same theory is true for removing any addictive substance from the body.  Detoxification is key.  We know this is true because if we consider the extreme case of the heroin user, they do not crave the heroin until they have been using it.  They never craved it before using it!  By removing any remnants of the substance (this can often take months even years) we can remove the cravings.  The same is true in a positive sense.  If we then become used to consuming things that are good for us we eventually crave that instead!
