“It is probable that the lemon is the most valuable of all fruit for preserving health.”
Maud Grieve: A Modern Herbal (1931)
Our Ridiculously Simple Step to Transform Your Health (and Life) this week is about drinking water infused with lemon. There are many basic lifestyle habits that are important to incorporate into our daily life, and this is certainly one of them. A lot has been written about the benefits of having an alkaline system, the opposite being an acidic one, and lemon has the unique ability to “digest” unhealthy acids in our body. Obviously anyone with a lemon allergy should avoid it and those with ulcers should too.
We often hear that when life gives us a lemon we should use it to make lemonade but perhaps a better option would be to squeeze it and drink it with water (not with sugar as in lemonade.) Modern research is proving that there are many health benefits to be gained from drinking lemon in our water. Warm lemon water serves as the perfect morning drink, as it aids the digestive system and makes the process of eliminating the waste products from the body easier.
Many of the alkaline elements that are present in lemons are useful to the body, especially potassium, which is an essential element for the body’s nervous system and since our nervous system controls and co-ordinates every other cell, tissue, muscle, gland and organ in the entire body it makes good sense to give it every opportunity to perform at peak condition. Our body uses sodium and potassium for the nerves to fire electrical signals (messages) to each other and the muscles.
In his book Biological Ionization in Human Nutrition Beddoe states that “Man does not live off the food he eats but off of the energy that is produced from the food he eats.” and science is discovering that different foods have different energies – raw and natural contain the most energy. The energy you get from your food comes from the atoms and molecules of energy in the food. To help your body get the energy from the food you are eating, drink lemon water regularly. Next to drinking pure water, drinking lemon water daily is the most important thing you can do for your health.
The high vitamin C content of the lemon has been used for hundreds of years to ward off scurvy among sailors and travellers and lemon is also a key ingredient in many toddies, having medicinal and culinary applications.
It is thought the word “toddy”comes from Tod’s well, a spring located on Arthur’s seat, the hill in the heart of Edinburgh, which was one of the city’s early water supplies. The Scots have long been fond of the toddy, and they believed that drinking toddies regularly would help prevent colds and invigorate the drinker.
In all hot toddies, the heat has a relaxing action, opens airways, and loosens phlegm. The hot water and steam moisten the airway. The honey provides trace nutrients and has antibacterial/antiviral properties. The lemon provides vitamins and minerals and the alcohol of course is a muscle relaxant and aids in sleeping.
Common uses of lemons:
- Immune system stimulant – used in cases of infection
- Blood purifier
- Antidote to symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, bloating, belching
- Liver stimulant and strengthening agent
- For general wellbeing
- As a food to nourish the brain and nervous system because of its high potassium content
- Contains calcium for healthy bones and teeth
- Used as a gargle for sore throat
