Not Called Killer Heels For Nothing!

They are not called “killer heels” for nothing! People have had a facination with shoes for centuries.  The Chinese practiced foot binding to keep women’s feet so small that they would fit into the tiniest of shoes and geisha girls wore uncomfortable shoes on huge platforms.  In both cases it was to emphasise feminity and weakness.

The modern pre-occupation with jamming feet into“killer heels” that are at the same time uncomfortable and unstable makes me realise we haven’t learned much from the past!

Walking in high heels is not something that every woman can do confidently.  In fact many cannot walk properly or even safely in them at all.  Wearing “killer heels” (not called killer heels for nothing!) can alter the forward curve in the spine, causing the pelvis to tip forward which affects the body’s natural alignment and therefore affects the body’s ability to maintain its centre of gravity which can not only increase your risk of falling but may have a disastrous effect on your nervous system!  Spinal nerves are at risk of becoming pinched also causing back pain, tingling and numbness in the legs and feet.   Twisted and fractured ankles are extremely common injuries.  Tiredness and fatigue can also be an end result.

For the sake of “looking good”, putting your feet into high heeled shoes can have serious consequences for the overall health of your feet as well.  The entire weight of the body will be directed onto the balls of your feet.  This can be especially dangerous for those who are over weight causing the ball of the foot to experience additional pressure which leaves the feet at risk of developing nerve problems and pain and the toes are at risk of becoming deformed by conditions such as bunions, hammer toes and ingrown toenails.  The long term risks include a permanent shortening of the achilles tendon which is often seen in women who constantly wear high heels.  We were never designed to wear heels and by doing so we constantly put our health at risk.

It is thought that arthritis in the knee may be linked to wearing high heels. A study was conducted to determine the amount of force applied to the knee joints of women who wear high heels. The report revealed that when wearing high heels the knee has on average 23% more force applied to it than when walking in low shoes or barefoot. The report concluded that arthritis in the knee is twice as common in women that wear high heels.

There is so much to be gained from a perfectly aligned spine. Compromising it by the wearing of high heels just seems crazy.

What Happens When We Ignore Warning Signs?

This should be a reminder never to ignore warning signals of any kind!   The same applies to the warning signals of the body.  Pain and malfunctions of any kind in the body are warning signals which should be embraced because they are telling us something that we are doing/not doing is not working for us, or our body has reached a limit of some kind.  This gives us the opportunity to think about what we are eating, how we are moving or not moving or what thoughts we are allowing ourselves to focus on that could be contributing to our pain or ill health.

Smiling Produces Powerful Chemicals

A smile is a beautiful way we can spread health,  happiness and harmony to the world around us.

Robert Zajonc is just one of many psychologists whose scientific research explains the fact that smiling and putting on a happy face (even a fake happy face) leads to physiological changes in the brain which causes the release of hormones and neurotransmitters – this is our own little drug factory right here in our body- no need for a trip to the pharmacy at all! So even a smile that starts out as a fake can produce this response.  Our body produces homones -  serotonin, endorphins, anti-histamines, estrogen, and progesterone , testosterone etc in response to many different triggers (including smiling and laughing).   Hormones are chemical substances in the body. They are made by endocrine glands which pass the hormones directly into the bloodstream. They are carried around the body in the blood and, in this way, hormones can cause changes at some distance from the gland where they originate.  Your nervous system controls your endocrine glands.   Your thoughts, (and traumas and toxins) can cause  interferences to the nervous system.   To be able to achieve it’s functions perfectly, the body needs a nervous system free of interference. Perceptions Are Beliefs That Permeate Every Cell

While most of us are aware of the healing influences of the placebo effect, few are aware of its evil twin, the nocebo effect. Just as surely as positive thoughts can heal, negative ones – including the belief we are susceptible to an illness, can actually manifest the undesired realities of those thoughts.

Japanese children allergic to a poison ivy-like plant took part in an experiment where a leaf of the poisonous plant was rubbed onto one forearm. As a control, a nonpoisonous leaf resembling the toxic plant was rubbed on the other forearm. As expected almost all of the children broke out in a rash on the arm rubbed with the toxic leaf and had no response to the imposter leaf.  What the children did not know was that the leaves were purposefully mislabeled. The negative thought of being touched by the poisonous plant led to the rash produced by the nontoxic leaf! In the majority of cases, no rash resulted from contact with the toxic leaf that was thought to be the harmless control. The conclusion is simple: positive perceptions enhance health, and negative perceptions precipitate dis-ease. This mind-bending example of the power of belief was one of the founding experiments that led to the science of psychoneuroimmunology.  Perceptions have a tremendous influence in shaping the character and experiences of our lives. They are more influential than positive thinking because they are more than mere thoughts in our minds. Perceptions are beliefs that permeate every cell. Simply, the expression of the body is a complement to the mind’s perceptions, or, in simpler terms, believing is seeing!

Dr Bruce Lipton is a world renowned cell biologist, former University of Wisconsin Medical School professor and Stanford University researcher. Dr.  Lipton has turned his scientific exploration to the integration of mind, body and spirit – how our beliefs affect our health.  Dr Lipton is a popular speaker at Chiropractic Conferences.  Read his book The Biology of Belief it is very illuminating.
