Looking for an obesity gene to explain the increase in obesity is plain ridiculous. All researchers need do is look at the changes to lifestyle in the last twenty five years and all will be clear. The presence of fast food (denatured foods) and inactivity is the root cause of obesity. In short, our lifestyle is responsible! In previous generations most people had less food and better quality home grown food and had more activity producing it. Today children start out in life with less than optimal nutrition and less than optimal activity. The TV and computer age has ensured children get no-where near the amount of activity they require to build a healthy body. Jamie Oliver is on a crusade to raise awareness and improve school lunches for children and help them to understand what healthy food really is. Fresh is best. Plain fruits and vegetables with meat (from animals who are not fed grains) and minimal grains and carbohydrates will help reduce weight significantly, however the energy output needs to increase also.
Obesity rates in England have trebled in the past 25 years and treatment and related care now cost the Health Service £2.5billion a year. Research shows that being seriously overweight takes an average of ten years off a normal lifespan because it increases the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes. Obesity is blamed for 30,000 deaths a year in Britain and if that statistic alone is not sufficient to make us rethink our lifestyles I am not sure what will!
