It was never the intention of the McCarthy Family to keep it in the family, in fact they have spent, and continue to spend to this day, considerable time and effort to inspire and encourage a new generation of Chiropractors to take up the torch and give to the world the teachings of BJ Palmer, the Father of Chiropractic. Chiropractic was re-discovered in 1895, as it had been lost for many generations since ancient times. Since the rediscovery, Chiropractic has developed into the refined philosophy, art and science that we have today – being concerned with the restoration of good health by restoring and maintaining a properly functioning nervous system. The goal of your Chiropractor is to restore and maintain your body’s health by keeping your spine free of interference.
The art of joint manipulation has been practiced for thousands of years. Hippocrates, The Father of Medicine (460-370 BC), describes manipulative procedures in his monumental work known as the Corpus Hippocrateum. Galen (130-202 AD) earned the title ‘Prince of Physicians’ when he relieved the paralysis of the right hand of Eudemas (a prominent Roman scholar) by careful manipulation of his neck. During the Middle Ages, the art of manipulation was practiced by bonesetters. This art was passed from generation to generation and was practiced in most communities in Europe, North Africa, and Asia by practitioners who learned their skills by apprenticeship. Amy Tan’s book – The Bonesetter’s Daughter is set in provincial China, where the Bonesetter was an important part of society. This is a brilliant book, not really about the bonesetter, but about his daughter and about a culture steeped in tradition, magic and superstition, where women were only valued as brides or servants. A must read!
At the New Zealand College of Chiropractic Lyceum in 2008, Dr Allan McCarthy gave a presentation about the McCarthy family’s associations with Chiropractic and I discovered that there are not eight as I have recorded in our literature, but thirty five chiropractors in the extended family and Richard and Karen’s daughter, Elise is currently in New Zealand embarking on her studies to become a Chiropractor too!!!! Richard’s Mother and Allan’s Father, were brother and sister, hence Richard and Allan are cousins.
Allan’s father, Dr David McCarthy, was one of the first Chiropractors in New Zealand and the current practice dates back fifty years and still to this day there are patients attending that clinic who used to see Dr David!! Those patients have come to know and love the benefits of keeping their spines free of interference so that the body can heal itself naturally.
Dr Richard McMinn, along with Dr Allan McCarthy, Dr Dan McCarthy and later Dr Nancy McCarthy (all cousins to Richard) studied and gained their Doctor of Chiropractic at the Fountainhead of Chiropractic, Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, USA. While studying for their degree, Dr Virgil Strang was President of the College. He is brother to Allan’s mother, and Dr Jack Dawson (then husband to Richard and Allan’s cousin) was also studying there. Dr Allan and his wife Adrienne have a daughter, Dr Lauren Frost, who graduated from the New Zealand College of Chiropractic in 2008 and is soon to join Alan in the family practice, making it three consecutive generations of Chiropractors in the same practice.
Recently we had a visit from Dr Allan and his family and the cousins were able to spend some time sharing the wonderful philosophy, art and science of Chiropractic which has helped improve the lives of millions of people the world over and has given their family such an amazing history.
The McCarthy family is truly one of Chiropractic connections!
