How To Slim While Snacking!

by Chiropractors Brighton on August 12, 2010

Did you know that the act of eating, actually uses up calories?  5 – 15% of your daily energy expenditure is used digesting, absorbing and storing the food we eat.  The secret to using snacking to lose or maintain weight is to choose your snacks wisely.  Eating small protein rich snacks approximately every three hours will help to stabilise blood sugars and prevent slumps in energy.  Protein rich foods are slow-burning for energy and therefore help you to feel fuller for longer, whereas carbohydrate snacks burn quickly to give you instant energy.

Sugary, starchy and fat-laden snacks are out!  Snacks that provide mostly protein and a little fibre are in!

Try from our list of favourite healthy snack foods:

Almonds – (absolute favourite) – approximately 14 almonds make for a great healthy, filling treat.

Celery With Peanut Butter – A stick of celery with a tablespoon of (healthy) peanut butter combines fibre and protein for the perfect between-meal treat. Almond butter can be substituted.

Cottage Cheese – A quarter of a cup of natural cottage cheese with chopped tomatoes, bell peppers, or a little salsa tossed in makes a wonderful snack. The cottage cheese provides the lean protein you need to stay satisfied and adding the fibre-rich veggies provides a tasty, healthy snack.

(Not too hard) Boiled Egg – Another very special favourite I often use for lunch on the run with some cherry tomatoes.  This is a great low-carb, protein-rich snack.

Cheese and Rice Cake – contrary to the advice you often see, your body needs good fats and a small amount of quality cheese makes for a very healthy snack.

Avocado – delicious and healthy.  Also use with rice cakes. Can be served with a little salsa for extra flavour or use tomato slices or try Karens World Famous Guacamole recipe with vege sticks.  A delicious family favourite.

Houmous and Vegetables sticks – You can make your own or purchase good quality ready made houmous to have with carrot sticks, broccoli and cauliflower florets, peas, peppers etc.

Apple and Cheese – this is a good old fashioned favourite.
