Dizziness is a relatively common complaint which Chiropractors are often consulted about and something which generally respondsBrighton Chiropractor very well to Chiropractic Care. The various symptoms that fall into the category of dizziness can affect people in a variety of ways, from being a mild nuisance to being severely disabling.  Don’t forget your prescription medications can sometimes cause dizziness too! If your dizziness is not being caused by medication and you would like to get to the cause of this problem, our Doctors of Chiropractic will perform simple tests to identify the cause of your dizziness which is often characterised by one of the following:

  • 1.   Lightheadedness
  • 2.  Feeling faint.
  • 3.  Feeling off- balance as if being pulled to one side and feels as if it would be easy to fall over.
  • 4.  Spinning or feeling as though the world is spinning. This can often occur in acute attacks, or it can be a constant, low level feeling.

Karel Lewit  MD, one of the foremost authorities in the world on loco motor system dysfunction and its effects on equilibrium, states: “It is important to stress that a cervical factor may be present in all forms of vertigo and dizziness … in no field is manipulation more effective than in the treatment of disturbances of equilibrium.”   It has been shown in several studies that the cervical spine plays a very strong role in the body’s regulation of equilibrium. Guyton states that the cervical spine plays the most important role in this regulation.

Vertigo, as stated earlier, is by definition an abnormal sensation of movement, usually spinning. Attacks of vertigo can be elicited by various movements or can be constant. When the vertigo is caused by Meniere’s disease it is often accompanied by tinnitus and hearing loss.

Before a management strategy can be formulated by your Chiropractor, there must be an accurate diagnosis of what is causing the dizziness.  Optimum function of the cervical spine is essential to the recovery of order and balance.
