Cycling For Pleasure.

Spring cycling

Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” – John F. Kennedy

Scientists once declared the world was flat and those who suggested otherwise were labelled – heretics (or lunatics)!! The world of health can be just as confusing with pills, potions and procedures being accepted and then rejected in quick succession. The average person is left wondering what, if any advice can be believed.

As we head towards summer, blue skies and tranquil days many will consider brushing off the dust and cycling for pleasure.  Cycling was once denounced for the harm it caused!

Doctors pointed out you were at risk of developing back pain – from leaning over the handlebars, facial disfigurement from over exertion (where’s the smelling salts please?) and a sore throat from the inhalation of harmful bacteria but apparently women were at most risk. In 1885 in the British Medical Journal, Dr Herman cautioned women against taking up such an activity with the following advice:  “The side to side movement of the pelvis produces an unnecessary effect on the sexual system which we need not particularise” So, ladies, take into consideration the above observation when deciding whether to take that bike ride or not!

The above admonitions did however, prove ineffective against the mounting enthusiasm for cycling (and women were prepared to take that risk!!).  Three years later the same journal denounced cycling as “bad for your heart”!  The detrimental effects they said, could produce dilation of the heart which could be very difficult to treat, however just over one hundred years later the London to Brighton bicycle race is endorsed by guess who?? – you guessed it – The British Heart Foundation!!

Cycling is one of the three best sporting activities as far as the human spine is concerned. It’s also lots of fun.  If you are serious about cycling, or just  doing it for pleasure it will make your cycling easier, more beneficial and much more pleasurable  if your spine is in line.  Have your spine checked at Chiropractic Life to help you get the best out of your cycling.                                                                                                                                              Chiropractic Life  88 Portland Road Hove, Bn3 5DL   – 01273 208188

God, that quote from the British Medical Journal sounds like it’s from 1885 not 1985.
