<p>The question is – “how are we investing it?”</p>
<p>Time cannot be managed, however, we can manage those things that take up our time.</p>

<li>Time is perishable – it must be used by midnight!</li>
<li>Time is measurable and we all get the same amount to use each day.</li>
<li>Time is irreplaceable – we cannot get it back once it has gone.</li>
<li>Time is a priority – we always make time for our priorities.</li>
</ul>
<p>This leaves the question “What are our priorities?”</p>
<p>Are we taking the time to be healthy?</p>

<p>If negative thinking is a habit, try some of the following questions to help channel thinking into a positive form:</p>
<ul>
<li>What can I learn from this?</li>
<li>How can I make this fun?</li>
<li>What am I grateful for?</li>
<li>What is perfect right now?</li>
<li>Am I willing to change something to create a new reality?</li>
<li>Can I create an exciting adventure from this?</li>
<li>What can I focus on that brings me pleasure and joy?</li>
<li>And sing &#8211; any happy, positive tune.    This is my personal favourite &#8211; singing helps to transform negative into positive.</li>

<p><strong>We don&#8217;t normally suggest eating sugary treats, but Christmas certainly has to be one exception</strong>!  As well as <a href="http://www.thewellnesspractice.com">Eating Well and Moving Well,  &#8211; Thinking Well is a vital part of the Lifestyle Wellness programme to help ensure ongoing health and vitality.  One of  the ways  that this contributes to &#8220;Thinking Well&#8221; is by being connected to others and sharing special times. </a></p>
<p>See below for The McMinn Gingerbread Recipe to share and enjoy, during the festive season.</p>
<p>The lead up to Christmas is as exciting as the actual event and each year I love the anticipation of the gingerbread making routine accompanied by &#8220;Rockin Around The Christmas Tree&#8221; and lots of frivolity.  Making gingerbread has been Elise&#8217;s specialty (<a href="http://www.chiropracticlifeblog.com/third-generation-chiropractor-on-running/">Third Generation Chiropractor)</a> and we all enjoy getting into the spirit of Christmas by making (or eating) gingerbread for friends and family, however we have a struggle to hide them long enough in our house so that some will survive until Christmas day.  I love gingerbread and love the process of seeing lots of little people emerge all gloriously brown from the oven.  You may even have to run, run, run as fast as you can to catch these little gingerbread men before they disappear from your kitchen too!   This is one gingerbread recipe that you will want to catch if you can but first a little history&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;. and then the recipe!</p>
<p><span>Gingerbread first appeared in central   Europe in the Middle Ages, made from sugars and spices that had been   brought back from the Middle East by soldiers returning from the   Crusades. In England, gingerbread only meant &#8220;preserved ginger,&#8221;   referring to the preservative effect of ginger on breads, cakes, and   other pastries. It wasn&#8217;t until the 15th century that gingerbread   referred specifically to the sweet cake made with treacle and ginger.   And it wasn&#8217;t until the nineteenth century that the treat became   associated primarily with Christmas. </span></p>
<p><span>Save your money and save your sanity &#8211; stay home and bake Gingerbread for presents this Christmas &#8211; this will help restore some of the real spirit of Christmas and help to reduce much of the stress!<br />
</span></p>

half a cup of golden syrup<br />
half a cup of butter<br />
4 cups of SR flour<br />
1 cup dark brown sugar<br />
2 eggs<br />
1 level tablespoon ginger</p>
<p>Cream  butter and sugar.  Add other ingredients .  Mix well.   Place on  floured board and knead.  Roll out thinly and cut into shapes.<br />
Place on greased oven tray.<br />
Bake 7 &#8211; 10 mins in a moderate oven</p>

<p><strong>Researchers have discovered that approximately 90% of visits to doctors are caused by stress!  It is not uncommon for people to present in our clinic with stress related pain.<br />
</strong></p>
<p>During periods of stress the body’s adrenal glands produce hormones,  			  such as adrenaline, which also increases blood pressure.   Chronic stress  			  keeps these hormones at dangerously high levels. However, studies  			  suggest that severe cases of stress extend beyond the temporary  			  increase in blood pressure and begin to injure cells of the body &#8211; which  			  may accelerate the aging process, leaving people susceptible to  			  various diseases.</p>
<p>For a long time psychologists have been aware of the impact stress has  			  on the body&#8217;s ability to fight infections, but now a study  			  has shown how stress also plays a major influence in altering the  			  functions of the immune system.</p>
<p>Researchers have concluded that the stressors that most negatively compromise  			  the immune system were the chronic stressors &#8211; stress of enduring duration.  They also discovered  			  the longer the duration of stress or perceived length of the stress,  			  the less the body&#8217;s ability to adapt to the stressful situation.  			  It was determined this kind of stress could lead to serious negative  			  health repercussions beginning with attacking the immune system  			  at the cellular level then going after the overall broader functions  			  of the immune system.</p>
<p>Clearly we need to do something about stress before it takes it&#8217;s toll.  <strong>Chiropractic Care is care of the nervous system</strong> &#8211; through which we experience our stress.  It makes such good sense to ensure that our nervous system is getting the help it needs to keep stress at bay.</p>
<p><strong>There are also some simple things that we can do for ourselves:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>In our last blog post we mentioned writing a gratitude journal every day for a few minutes.  This is a powerful exercise.  I have done it myself and continue to do so from time to time,  however I believe the best form of this is when it is done everyday!</li>
<li>Many find comfort in prayer.</li>
<li>Take ten deep breaths.  As you inhale first let your abdomen swell then take further breath in as you lift your rib cage.  Exhale by deflating your abdomen first and then your upper chest to release all the breath.   This can be done standing, sitting or laying down and is perfect to begin the day and end the day or to use at anytime during the day.  Yoga can help with this breathing exercise which is not hard to perfect.</li>
<li>Practicing having positive mental thoughts and images.  This takes persistence. Viewing the glass half full rather than half empty!</li>
<li>Taking time out to walk in nature.</li>
<li>Doing a good deed.</li>
<li>Giving.</li>
<li>Listening to beautiful gentle soul music.</li>
<li>Sitting by a fire.</li>
<li>Lighting a candle.</li>
<li>Sharing.</li>

<p>Imagine if you didn&#8217;t service your car, didn&#8217;t put the correct fuel  in the tank and didn&#8217;t get the wheels aligned during an MOT!  Wheels  come out of alignment and cause wear and tear on the tyres which if left  uncorrected may even cause a blow out!</p>
<p>Misalignments of the spine left uncorrected cause wear and tear  (degeneration) too and also prevent the body from working the way nature  intended.  Misalignments prevent clear messages from travelling from  brain to body and body to brain which over time begins to show as <em>dis</em>-ease.</p>
<p>Putting oil, or water or orange juice in the fuel tank of your car  would have it&#8217;s problems too!  When we put food in our body which is not  healthy our body won&#8217;t work so well either!</p>
<p>Washing and polishing the car and running it regularly to keep the  battery charged up are also things that preserve our cars.  Our body is  no different &#8211; it responds well to being cared for and taken for a run  too!</p>
<p>When your car wears out you can replace it, but when your body wears out &#8211; where are you going to live??</p>

<p>An interesting study was done on hotel maids by Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer. Eighty eight maids were divided into two groups. One group was educated on how much exercise they got when they climbed stairs, made beds and went about their job. The other group was the control group and was told nothing.</p>
<p>By simply telling forty four of the maids that what they did each day involved some serious exercise, Langer was apparently able to lower the women’s blood pressure, shave pounds off their bodies and improve their body-fat and “waist to hip” ratios. Their bodies were doing the same work. Their minds had been simply made to think of it as “exercise”.</p>
<p>Apparently our mind/body responds to images and stimuli whether it is “real” or not and that’s where the value of visualisation comes in and the importance of keeping positive pictures in our minds – especially of our health, but unfortunately most people think sickness, rather than health.  Even if you are healthy, your body can become diseased simply through the inappropriate unconscious control of your mind/emotions.</p>
