I have suffered with back problems for many years. I remember when I was about 12 or 13 years of age and I would be in agony with a sharp pain going all the way down my left leg. My father was very good and out would come the wintergreen cream and he would vigorously rub my let until I had a small measure of relief. This pain turned out to be sciatica and eventually after a long time I was referred to the hospital where I had manipulation and was put into a plaster jacket. I was in that jacket for at least six months and at that time I was working as a cinema projectionist and for that had to climb a winding fire escape to get to the top of the building – no easy task with a bulky cast around the middle! If only I had heard about Chiropractic back then I am sure I would not have had the endless problems that plagued me for many years.
In September of 2009 I was in Wales on holiday. Sitting in the garden of the cottage we were renting with a sketch book on my lap trying to capture an image of the cottage and the flowers around me. I must have twisted my body in an unnatural position because all of a sudden I was in terrible pain right in the small of my back. I could hardly move and my friend helped me to pack away and get seated in a more comfortable chair. We still had a few more days of our holiday left and it was very difficult for me to walk or even sit properly.
When I returned home I made an appointment to see the doctor. I had been in pain for at least three weeks by this stage. Doctors always say “What can I do for you” and of course she did, so I replied I was in great pain. She tutted and lifted her eyes to the ceiling saying “back” ! I asked her if she would refer me to the hospital for an x-ray and her reply was that they didn’t do that any more and that I would have to be in pain for at least six weeks before she would even think about a referral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not wanting me to suffer she prescribed 14 pain killers a day to help with the pain. Can you believe that? I walked out of there very despondent. The NHS don’t use Osteopaths and Chiropractors and in fact my doctor recommended that I didn’t see a Chiropractor as they were too harsh and that an Osteopath would be better!!! I had done everything my doctor had told me to do like buying MBT shoes, rubbing gel into the area that hurt and going to see an Osteopath. Good advice but she couldn’t remember telling me to do any of those things so although the shoes were a wonderful idea and the Osteopath was a very nice man and the gel helped up to a point, my back wasn’t getting any better. I was still finding it difficult to walk very far without having to sit down. I was now getting an extra pain under my shoulder blades and it didn’t help that I have an arthritic knee.
I was talking to a friend one day and she told me about Helen Martin an excellent Chiropractor that she had been seeing for some time. She recommended I go along and see her and lucky for me Chiropractic Life had a special offer on at that time so I got a free consultation and free x-ray. Fantastic! I went along and was impressed by the way I was put at ease and had everything explained to me. I booked the recommended appointments and went along the following week to begin my care. I have been attending for some time now and the difference is incredible. I don’t flop down in the chair in pain any more. I can walk a lot further than I used to. Even my husband has noticed a difference. I still h ave a few more treatments to go and then I will be able to cut it down to once a month.
I am glad I made up my own mind and visited a chiropractor – it has done me the world of good and I have now recommended my friend see Helen at Chiropractic Life too!
PS I meant to mention, instead of the fourteen painkillers per day I used to take before I had my Chiropractic Care – I now only take 2! and I have just been on holiday and was able to walk four and a half miles…………..
Footnote from Chiropractic Life: Perhaps the NHS have changed a little since their website link on back pain includes the following :
Some people with back pain choose to use complementary therapies alongside more conventional treatments, while others choose to use them as stand-alone treatments
Complementary therapies such as chiropractic, osteopathy, shiatsu and acupuncture may help to ease your back pain, and encourage you to feel relaxed.
An osteopath is a health professional who specialises in treating the skeleton and muscles, and chiropractor treats joint, muscle and bone problems, focusing on the spine.
Perhaps the NHS needs an update - Chiropractors are Spinal Nerve Specialists!
